I'm not sure if most Americans are suspicious of immigrants. Poll after poll shows that most Americans are pro-immigrants and want immigration reform. However, I think they also want a tighter border as well. If they knew the real facts, they would know that the number of illegal immigrants crossing the border has gone down dramatically over the years.

The problem with the immigration debate is the anti-immigrant group yells the loudest and gets the most attention. This is unfortunate, and when you have politicians that are a part of this group, it gets even more attention in a very negative and hurtful way.

Somehow, we have to find a way to change the immigration debate, help people understand the importance of immigrants in the history of this nation, change our immigration laws to reflect the 21st century and our global economy, and get back to our roots as a country that opens its arms to others (in a responsible way).

But, yes, I am glad I made that decision too. It's nice helping good immigrants help our country, and be a vocal advocate on the 'right' side of the immigration debate!

I'm so glad you did focus on immigration, Murali. There is such an important need for good people to find good representation in these rather sobering times where so many Americans are suspicious of immigrants (forgetting that, except for new immigrants and American Indians, we all have immigrant heritage.) I'm glad you made that decision.

"It’s about knowing the roles that nonprofits and community organizations play, what issues they are addressing, and rolling up our own sleeves to help."

That's exactly right. Sometimes if we just throw money at things, all we create is a dependency society or community. That is counterproductive to sustainability.

Creating sustainable solutions takes vision, teamwork, and ingenuity. And equally, if not more, important, it takes long-term commitment.

I like your video on the Lost Boys. The student who commented on education is right - never take it for granted.

Last spring, a local group dedicated to educating the public about this community and helping the "Lost Boys of Southern Sudan" adjust here in the U.S. approached me to help them tell their stories. It was truly enlightening. http://jcoscia.myncblogs.com/2010/06/07/nobody-need-wait-a-single-moment-before-starting-to-improve-the-world-anne-frank/
Caring about our communities and our world is more than about writing a check. It's about knowing the roles that nonprofits and community organizations play, what issues they are addressing, and rolling up our own sleeves to help.
Friends Unite is doing a great thing!
